“What size heat shrink do I need?” has one rule behind it: size to the widest point the tube has to slide over, with a little clearance, then make sure it shrinks down far enough to grip. The trap is sizing to the bare copper — nobody sleeves bare conductor. You sleeve the insulated wire, or the crimp barrel, both of which are noticeably fatter than the conductor gauge suggests.

Wire vs Connector — Size to the Barrel
The single most common sizing mistake is covering a crimp splice, ring terminal, or lug with tubing sized to the wire. The barrel is the fat part — the tube has to pass over that, not the cable. Typical insulated butt-splice barrels run about 5-6 mm for 22-18 AWG (use 1/4"), 7-8 mm for 16-14 AWG (use 3/8"), and 9-11 mm for 12-10 AWG (use 1/2"). Over any crimp in automotive, marine, or outdoor work, use 3:1 adhesive-lined dual wall so the adhesive seals the barrel edges.
Rule of thumb: bare run → size to the insulated OD. Crimp / lug → step up one to two sizes to clear the barrel. When in doubt, measure with calipers and enter it in the calculator.

Signal & Low-Current (28-22 AWG)
3/32" covers it at both ratios. Fine hookup, sensor, and data wire — the smallest standard size grips a thin insulated conductor without slipping.
General Wiring (18-14 AWG)
18 AWG → 1/8", 16 AWG → 1/8" (3:1) / 3/16" (2:1), 14 AWG → 3/16". Automotive and 12V accessory runs. Over a butt splice, step up to 1/4" or 3/8".
Power Wiring (12-8 AWG)
12 AWG → 1/4", 10 AWG → 1/4" (3:1), 8 AWG → 5/16" (3:1). Amp, inverter, and accessory feeds. 3:1 dual-wall for anything exposed or vibrating.
Battery & Heavy Cable (6 AWG-4/0)
4 AWG → 1/2", 2 AWG → 5/8", 1/0 → 3/4", 4/0 → 1" (all 3:1). Battery, welding, and marine cable — use 3:1 dual-wall, and size to the lug barrel when covering the terminal.

Use 1/8" (3.2 mm) at both 2:1 and 3:1. Insulated 18 AWG is about 2.4 mm over the jacket, which 1/8" clears and recovers tight. Over a crimped 18 AWG butt splice (5-6 mm barrel), step up to 1/4" 3:1 adhesive-lined.
What size heat shrink for 8 gauge wire?
Use 3/8" for 2:1, or 5/16" for 3:1. Insulated 8 AWG is about 7 mm over the jacket; the 3:1 recovery closes 5/16" down onto it. For 8 AWG lugs, size to the barrel instead.
What size heat shrink for 4 gauge wire?
Use 5/8" for 2:1, or 1/2" for 3:1. Insulated 4 AWG runs about 10.5 mm; 1/2" 3:1 adhesive-lined is standard for a waterproof seal on battery and inverter runs. Covering the lug itself, step up to 3/4".
What size heat shrink for 1/0 wire?
Use 1" for 2:1, or 3/4" for 3:1. Insulated 1/0 marine and battery cable is roughly 13-14 mm; 3/4" 3:1 clears it and seals as the adhesive flows. For the 1/0 lug barrel, use 1".
Do I size heat shrink to the wire or the connector?
To the widest point the tube passes over. For a bare run that is the insulated OD (never the bare conductor). For a crimp splice, terminal, or lug it is the barrel, which is fatter — so step up. Allow 10-20% clearance, then confirm the recovered ID grips.
