3:1 Heat Shrink

Fits12–14 AWG4.8mm

3/16 inch heat shrink tubing fits 12–14 AWG wire — the standard gauge range for automotive lighting circuits, trailer wiring, HVAC control wiring, and residential branch circuit leads. NFPA 70 Table 310.15 rates 14 AWG at 15A and 12 AWG at 20A; ABYC E-11 Table XI uses the same ratings for marine primary wiring in these sizes. At 4.8mm expanded diameter, this tube slides freely over 12 and 14 AWG conductors and recovers to approximately 1.6mm after full heat application. The 3:1 adhesive-lined construction is essential for trailer connector repairs and outdoor lighting harnesses where the junction sees road spray, rain, and seasonal freeze-thaw cycles — the adhesive inner liner flows into voids around the connector body, completely blocking moisture entry that a 2:1 non-adhesive tube leaves open. For completely dry indoor panel wiring, the 2:1 standard is a lower-cost option in this size. The 3/16" size is the standard for covering heat-shrink butt connectors on trailer harness repairs and sealing ring terminal crimps on outdoor lighting circuits where long-term weatherproof protection is the objective.

Sizing over a connector? The Wire Gauge row above is for bare conductor. Heat shrink must be sized to the widest point it passes over, so a crimped butt splice or lug barrel needs a larger tube than the wire alone — a 22–18 AWG splice barrel measures 5–6mm, a 16–14 AWG barrel 7–8mm, and a 12–10 AWG barrel 9–11mm. Measure the barrel, allow about 20% clearance, and confirm the recovered diameter is smaller than the narrowest thing the tube must grip. Use the size calculator.

High quality and amazing value for the price

I'll never buy individual bags of heat shrink tubing again. This is very high quality with a shrink ratio that is truly amazing (all of the tubing from this company is). I wonder if I'll be able to use this entire roll in 10 years!

Good quality and sealing heat shrink

Heat shrink works good. Bought this for work. Makes a nice sealed wire connection. Good quality, better than pre cut heat shrink, you can make whatever length you want.

I LIKE THIS!

I solder, and heat shrink, all of my automotive electrical connections. This is a great product, and I can cut it to any length. The price is great, and the shipping was fast!

Sizing & Application — 3/16 inch, 60ft roll

The gauge that runs the bilge pump, and the one place a covered joint is not good enough.

3/16 inch (4.8mm) is sized for bare 12–14 AWG — the gauge that carries bilge pumps, navigation lights, trailer harnesses and residential branch circuits. NFPA 70 Table 310.15 rates 14 AWG at 15A and 12 AWG at 20A, and ABYC E-11 Table XI carries the same figures for marine primary wire. It is also the gauge where a wet joint stops being an inconvenience and becomes a pump that will not start.

Why this diameter is bought in pairs

Almost nobody uses 3/16 inch alone. A crimped 16–14 AWG splice barrel measures 7–8mm, which will not enter a 4.8mm bore, so the splice takes 3/8 inch while the conductor either side of it takes 3/16 inch. Anyone working this gauge regularly ends up holding both diameters, and running out of one strands the other.

That pairing is the practical form of the sizing rule: choose the tube from the widest point it has to pass over, then confirm the recovered diameter is still smaller than the narrowest thing it has to grip. 3/16 inch recovers to roughly 1.6mm, well under 12 and 14 AWG insulation, so it grips hard on the conductor and would never have reached the barrel.

The failure that follows from getting this wrong is specific. A tube stretched over a barrel it was never sized for goes on under tension, traps air at the shoulder and recovers with a void at exactly the point water enters. The joint looks finished and is not sealed, which is worse than leaving it bare, because nobody re-inspects a joint that looks done.

Allow roughly 20% clearance on the expanded figure. If the tube drags going on cold, it is the wrong size — step up rather than force it.

When to reach past 3/16 inch

01 · You are covering the splice itself

The barrel is the widest point, not the wire. A crimped 16–14 AWG butt splice needs 3/8 inch. Keep 3/16 inch for the conductor runs either side.

02 · The run is inside a dry panel

If the joint will never see moisture, the 3/16" 2:1 gives the same insulation and band marking at a lower cost per foot. The adhesive liner is what you pay for here, so buy it where it does work.

03 · You need one repair

The 60ft roll is a stocking quantity. A single trailer or bilge repair is better served by the 10ft short pack of the same tubing.

04 · Above 600V

Rated 600V rms. On a 1000V circuit the conductor must already carry its own insulation rating, and the adhesive liner acts as a seal over an already-rated component.

How it shrinks.

01

Measure & Select

Verify the expanded diameter is 20–30% larger than your wire or connector. The tubing must slide freely before heat is applied — if it drags, go one size up.

02

Cut & Thread

Cut to length and thread onto the wire or cable before making the splice or crimp. Overlap each terminal or connector end by at least 10mm for a proper seal.

03

Apply Heat

The tubing starts shrinking at 100°C, but the adhesive liner only flows at 120°C — so keep the heat gun moving past the point where it looks shrunk. Start at the center and work outward to push air toward the ends. Adhesive will appear at the tube ends — that is your visual seal indicator.

04

Inspect

The tubing should be tight and uniform with adhesive visible at both ends. No gaps, lifting, or cold spots. Pull-test the finished connection to confirm the adhesive bond.
