3:1 Heat Shrink

Fits10–12 AWG6.4mm

1/4 inch heat shrink tubing fits 10–12 AWG wire — the primary gauge range for marine electrical systems, 30-amp shore power feeds, bilge pump wiring, solar panel input cables on 12/24/48V DC systems, and outdoor landscape lighting runs. ABYC E-11 Table XI rates 12 AWG at 20A and 10 AWG at 30A in a standard marine installation — the core sizing for most onboard accessory, navigation light, and bilge pump circuits. At 6.4mm expanded diameter, this tube slides freely over 10 and 12 AWG conductors and recovers to approximately 2.1mm after full heat application. For any marine or outdoor connection, the 3:1 adhesive-lined version is the correct specification — the hot-melt inner liner displaces water and bonds directly to the wire jacket to prevent saltwater corrosion at the crimp point. For indoor dry-area wiring where waterproofing is not required, the 2:1 standard is a lower-cost option in this size. The 1/4" size is the standard for covering ring terminal and butt connector crimps on marine-grade primary wire throughout bilge, navigation, and accessory circuits on boats of all sizes.

Sizing over a connector? The Wire Gauge row above is for bare conductor. Heat shrink must be sized to the widest point it passes over, so a crimped butt splice or lug barrel needs a larger tube than the wire alone — a 22–18 AWG splice barrel measures 5–6mm, a 16–14 AWG barrel 7–8mm, and a 12–10 AWG barrel 9–11mm. Measure the barrel, allow about 20% clearance, and confirm the recovered diameter is smaller than the narrowest thing the tube must grip. Use the size calculator.

High quality and amazing value for the price

I'll never buy individual bags of heat shrink tubing again. This is very high quality with a shrink ratio that is truly amazing (all of the tubing from this company is). I wonder if I'll be able to use this entire roll in 10 years!

Good quality and sealing heat shrink

Heat shrink works good. Bought this for work. Makes a nice sealed wire connection. Good quality, better than pre cut heat shrink, you can make whatever length you want.

I LIKE THIS!

I solder, and heat shrink, all of my automotive electrical connections. This is a great product, and I can cut it to any length. The price is great, and the shipping was fast!

Sizing & Application — 1/4 inch, 60ft roll

The size that empties first, because it does two jobs instead of one.

1/4 inch (6.4mm) is the diameter every service van runs out of, and the reason is arithmetic rather than popularity. It covers bare 10–12 AWG conductor, and it is also the size specified over a crimped 22–18 AWG insulated butt splice, whose barrel measures 5–6mm. Two unrelated jobs draw on the same roll, so it depletes at roughly twice the rate of its neighbours.

What ABYC E-11 actually requires over a crimp

ABYC E-11 calls for adhesive-lined heat shrink over crimped connections in marine service. The reasoning is narrow and worth understanding: a crimp is gas-tight only at the instant it is made, and once an electrolyte reaches the interface, the barrel and the conductor become a galvanic pair with salt water between them. Corrosion then proceeds inside the barrel, where no inspection reaches.

The resulting fault is a rising contact resistance rather than a break. Under 20 or 30 amps that resistance turns into heat at a single point, which accelerates the corrosion, which raises the resistance further. Navigation lights dim, a bilge pump runs slow, and the connection eventually discolours the insulation around it.

A single-wall tube covers the barrel but leaves both entry throats open, and water tracks in along the strands from either end. The hot-melt liner in this tubing flows at 120°C, fills the throat, and bonds to the barrel and the wire insulation at once. Apply heat from the middle outward so adhesive is driven toward both ends; a small bead at each end is the seal, and a joint with no bead usually has a void inside it.

Size to the widest point the tube must pass over — on this diameter that is usually the crimp barrel, not the wire.

When 1/4 inch is the wrong call

01 · The splice is on 16–14 AWG

That barrel runs 7–8mm and will not enter a 6.4mm bore. Step up to 3/8 inch for the splice and keep 1/4 inch for the conductor either side.

02 · The wire is 20–22 AWG

On fine conductor a 1/4 inch tube recovers loose at 2.1mm. Use 3/32 inch on the wire itself and reserve 1/4 inch for the splice that wire feeds.

03 · The joint stays dry and indoors

Inside a sealed panel there is nothing for the adhesive to exclude. The 1/4" 2:1 gives the same insulation and band marking on a 120ft roll for less per foot.

04 · Above 600V

Our rating is 600V rms. On a 1000 Vdc string the conductor must be rated for the circuit and the tubing seals rather than insulates — which is where DC terminations actually fail.

How it shrinks.

01

Measure & Select

Verify the expanded diameter is 20–30% larger than your wire or connector. The tubing must slide freely before heat is applied — if it drags, go one size up.

02

Cut & Thread

Cut to length and thread onto the wire or cable before making the splice or crimp. Overlap each terminal or connector end by at least 10mm for a proper seal.

03

Apply Heat

The tubing starts shrinking at 100°C, but the adhesive liner only flows at 120°C — so keep the heat gun moving past the point where it looks shrunk. Start at the center and work outward to push air toward the ends. Adhesive will appear at the tube ends — that is your visual seal indicator.

04

Inspect

The tubing should be tight and uniform with adhesive visible at both ends. No gaps, lifting, or cold spots. Pull-test the finished connection to confirm the adhesive bond.
