NFPA 70 Table 310.15 rates 14 AWG at 15A and 12 AWG at 20A, and ABYC E-11 Table XI carries the same ratings for marine primary wire. At 4.8mm expanded, the tube slides over bare 12 and 14 AWG conductors and recovers to roughly 1.6mm. Size to the connector, not the copper: a crimped 16–14 AWG splice barrel runs 7–8mm, so the splice wants 3/8 inch while the conductor either side takes 3/16 inch. This is where dual wall earns its price — single-wall tubing lets salt water wick along the strands by capillary action, while the hot-melt liner flows at 120°C and blocks it. Heat shrink must be sized to the widest point it passes over, so a crimped butt splice or lug barrel needs a larger tube than the wire alone — a 22–18 AWG splice barrel measures 5–6mm, a 16–14 AWG barrel 7–8mm, and a 12–10 AWG barrel 9–11mm. Sizing & Application — 3/16 inch, 10ft pack
The size that belongs in the van, and the one it has to travel with.
3/16 inch (4.8mm) fits bare 12–14 AWG — bilge pumps, navigation lights, trailer harnesses, branch circuits. NFPA 70 Table 310.15 rates 14 AWG at 15A and 12 AWG at 20A. It is the highest-frequency spot-repair diameter on a service vehicle, and it is also the one that is useless on its own, because the repairs it turns up for almost always involve a crimp it cannot cover.
Building a repair kit around the conductor-and-splice pair
A call-out at this gauge is typically a failed joint rather than a failed cable. The fix is to cut back to clean copper, crimp a new splice, and seal both the splice and the conductor either side of it. Those are two different diameters: 3/8 inch over the 7–8mm barrel, 3/16 inch on the wire.
Carry only one and the job stops. Carry a 60ft roll of each and you are hauling 120 feet of tubing to a repair that consumes eighteen inches, in a vehicle where space is the scarce resource. Two ten-foot packs weigh almost nothing, take a fraction of a drawer, and cover a season of this work.
That is the argument for the short format on a service vehicle generally: it is not about the money, it is that a van carrying four diameters in packs can finish more jobs than one carrying a single diameter in bulk. Restock the packs that empty rather than committing shelf space to a roll per size.

ABYC E-11 calls for adhesive-lined heat shrink over crimped connections in marine service, which is why the repair kit version of this size is dual wall rather than single.
When a pack is not the right format
01 · You are rewiring, not repairing
A full boat or trailer rewire runs through this diameter quickly. At that scale the 60ft roll is both cheaper and fewer joins in the middle of a run.
02 · The joint is a splice
A crimped 16–14 AWG barrel measures 7–8mm and will not enter a 4.8mm bore. That is the 3/8 inch pack, not this one.
03 · Everything stays inside a dry panel
Where no water reaches, the 3/16" 2:1 does the insulation and band marking for less per foot.
04 · Above 600V
We hold 600V rms and nothing above it. On a 1000 Vdc array the conductor must already be rated for the circuit.

How it shrinks.

Measure & Select
Verify the expanded diameter is 20–30% larger than your wire or connector. The tubing must slide freely before heat is applied — if it drags, go one size up.

Cut & Thread
Cut to length and thread onto the wire or cable before making the splice or crimp. Overlap each terminal or connector end by at least 10mm for a proper seal.

Apply Heat
The tubing starts shrinking at 100°C, but the adhesive liner only flows at 120°C — so keep the heat gun moving past the point where it looks shrunk. Start at the center and work outward to push air toward the ends. Adhesive will appear at the tube ends — that is your visual seal indicator.

Inspect
The tubing should be tight and uniform with adhesive visible at both ends. No gaps, lifting, or cold spots. Pull-test the finished connection to confirm the adhesive bond.
