No, and this is the most common sizing mistake at this diameter. A lug crimped onto 2 AWG is far wider than the cable — barrel plus inspection window often exceeds 15mm, against a 12.7mm expanded bore. Use 1/2" along the cable run and step up to 5/8" or 3/4" at the terminated lug.

Is 1/2 inch dual wall heat shrink waterproof?

Yes. The adhesive liner flows at 120°C and seals against battery acid, salt spray, and road film — the three things that destroy an unsealed battery cable termination. UL 224, 600V, -55°C to +125°C.

Is a 10ft roll enough for a battery relocation?

Yes for the cable run itself. Ten feet of 1/2" covers a typical battery relocation without buying a full spool, though you should stock 5/8" or 3/4" separately for the lug ends, which need the larger bore.

Is the 600V rating AC or DC?

AC. Heat shrink tubing is rated under UL 224, which expresses voltage in volts rms — so our 600V tubing is rated 600 V rms, and we hold no rating above it. The UL 224 standard ratings are 150V, 300V and 600V; since Edition 8, published February 2026, an optional higher voltage rating is also available, which our tubing does not carry. On any circuit above 600V — a 1000 Vdc solar string, for example — the conductor itself must carry the insulation rating, UL 4703 PV wire or RHW-2/USE-2, both rated 2000V, with heat shrink used as a sealing cover over those already-rated components rather than as the primary insulation.

Will a 1/2" 10ft pack work on 1000V solar wiring?

Yes — as a seal, not as insulation. This 1/2" (12.7mm) tubing is rated 600 V rms, and we hold no rating above it, so it is not the insulation of record on a 1000 Vdc string: the conductor carries that rating, UL 4703 PV wire or RHW-2/USE-2, both rated 2000V. The 10ft pack is sized for spot repairs to 2–4 AWG conductors already in service, and the voltage class is identical to the large rolls. If a supplier offers you 1000V rated tubing, ask which standard, edition and file number backs the number.

Heat shrink must be sized to the widest point it passes over, so a crimped butt splice or lug barrel needs a larger tube than the wire alone — a 22–18 AWG splice barrel measures 5–6mm, a 16–14 AWG barrel 7–8mm, and a 12–10 AWG barrel 9–11mm. Sizing & Application — 1/2 inch, 10ft pack

A battery relocation needs two diameters. This is one of them.

1/2 inch (12.7mm) slides over bare 2–4 AWG battery cable and seals crimped 12–10 AWG splice barrels at 9–11mm. ABYC E-11 Table XI rates 4 AWG at 70A and 2 AWG at 95A. What it will not do is pass over the lug on the end of that cable, and understanding why turns a relocation into a two-pack purchase rather than a frustrating afternoon.

The run and the ends are different sizing problems

Bare 2 AWG cable measures around 10mm over the jacket, so a 12.7mm tube passes over the run comfortably and recovers to about 4.2mm — well down onto the jacket, gripping properly. Along the cable this is exactly the right size, and it is where most of the tubing on a relocation goes.

The ends are a different measurement entirely. A lug crimped onto 2 AWG has a barrel of 13–15mm and a palm wider still, so barrel plus inspection window commonly exceeds 15mm. That is past a 12.7mm bore, and not by a little. The lug ends need 3/4 inch, which is a separate pack.

Buying both as packs is the sensible shape for this job. A relocation uses six to ten feet of the run size and perhaps two feet across four lug ends — quantities that two ten-foot packs cover exactly, where two bulk rolls would leave you holding eighty surplus feet of tubing in two diameters you may not touch again.

The adhesive liner seals against battery acid, salt spray and road film. Those three are why a covered battery termination is not the same as a sealed one.

02 · A thin jacket

Below about 5mm the recovered wall is not gripping much. Step down to the 3/8 inch pack so the tube closes onto the cable properly.

03 · Dry indoor cable runs

Inside a conditioned battery room the job is identification and abrasion, and the 1/2" 2:1 does that on a 120ft roll for less per foot.

04 · Above 600V

Rated 600V rms. On a 1000 Vdc system the conductor carries the insulation rating and heat shrink is a seal over an already-rated component.

How it shrinks.

Measure & Select

Verify the expanded diameter is 20–30% larger than your wire or connector. The tubing must slide freely before heat is applied — if it drags, go one size up.

Cut & Thread

Cut to length and thread onto the wire or cable before making the splice or crimp. Overlap each terminal or connector end by at least 10mm for a proper seal.

Apply Heat

The tubing starts shrinking at 100°C, but the adhesive liner only flows at 120°C — so keep the heat gun moving past the point where it looks shrunk. Start at the center and work outward to push air toward the ends. Adhesive will appear at the tube ends — that is your visual seal indicator.

Inspect

The tubing should be tight and uniform with adhesive visible at both ends. No gaps, lifting, or cold spots. Pull-test the finished connection to confirm the adhesive bond.
